A lot can happen when six veterans get together and decide to help each other out. Vietnam War veteran Dick Murphy of Newark, Ohio has trouble walking, but thanks to Veterans First Foundation and your donations, he received an electric scooter. Veterans First is a nonprofit organization located here in Columbus, Ohio.
Murphy said that they are taking care of him and fixing him right up. Veterans First has about 10 volunteers who help run a clothing store on the west side of Columbus that serves around 300 veterans each month, according to Art Block, 83, who volunteers for the group. They also receive help from Newark Eagles and the Newark Elks, who each donate money and clothing, according to Art Block.
Murphy said that without stores like that, veterans would have a hard time.
Veterans First also hopes to reach younger Iraq vets who may return home and not know of the services offered to them. After being thanked, Veterans First Foundation Director, John Schmenk, looked at Murphy and said, "I'm not giving you a handout, I'm giving you a hand-up."
